Overview

Learning disability is lifelong condition affecting learning understanding and adaptive functioning from before age 18. NOT same as learning difficulties like dyslexia. More significant and pervasive. People learn slower and may need support with daily tasks cooking money understanding information. Intelligence varies. Some live independently others need 24-7 care. About 2 percent UK population. Historically institutionalised and abused. Today emphasises rights dignity inclusion self-determination. But attitudes lag. Infantilisation low expectations exclusion remain. People with learning disabilities can communicate preferences make choices lead meaningful lives with proper support. Often co-occurs with autism epilepsy cerebral palsy genetic conditions. Support focuses on life skills communication community inclusion maximising independence through person-centred planning.
