Overview

Childhood trauma encompasses abuse physical emotional sexual neglect witnessing violence parental substance abuse parental mental illness incarceration divorce. Adverse Childhood Experiences ACEs research shows trauma rewires developing brains affecting attachment stress response lifelong health. Trauma is not about what happened but about impact. Child who felt unsafe unloved uncared for experiences trauma regardless of external judgement. Emotional neglect is trauma. Watching parent being hurt is trauma. Living with alcoholic parent is trauma. Body keeps score. Trauma presents as hypervigilance difficulty trusting emotional dysregulation nightmares flashbacks dissociation. Children may seem aggressive withdrawn attention-seeking. These are adaptations for survival. Behaviour is communication of unmet needs fear. Healing requires safety stability trauma-informed relationships. Therapy EMDR trauma-focused CBT play therapy processes traumatic memories. But therapy alone is not enough. Stable caregiving felt safety consistent adults who do not abandon or hurt are fundamental. Recovery possible with trauma-informed care.
