Overview

Oppositional Defiant Disorder is pattern of angry defiant vindictive behaviour beyond typical childhood defiance. But ODD almost always RESPONSE to trauma unmet needs ADHD autism learning difficulties chronic stress. Rarely standalone condition despite being labelled as such. Behaviours include frequent tantrums arguing with adults actively defying rules deliberately annoying others blaming others being easily annoyed. Behaviours cause significant impairment at home school. However medical model fails to ask WHY. What unmet needs sensory issues language processing difficulties trauma drive this behaviour. ODD diagnosis controversial. Pathologises children distress without addressing causes. Children labelled ODD often have undiagnosed ADHD autism trauma PDA. Behaviour is communication of overwhelm. Punishment-based approaches worsen ODD. Trauma-informed needs-based approaches resolve it. Effective intervention identifies underlying causes. ADHD medication can eliminate ODD. Trauma therapy heals. PDA-aware approaches reduce demand overwhelm. Collaborative Problem Solving addresses lagging skills. Label ODD often disappears when needs met.
