Overview

Intellectual Disability means significant difficulties with learning understanding adaptive functioning. Begins before age 18 lifelong. NOT disease or mental health condition but differences in how brain processes information. People with ID learn grow develop just more slowly with support. Classified as mild moderate severe profound based on support needs. Many with mild ID live independently work manage most daily tasks with occasional support. Those with profound ID need 24-7 care. About 2 percent UK population. People with ID terribly treated historically. Institutionalisation abuse sterilisation. Today emphasises rights dignity inclusion self-determination. Yet attitudes lag. Infantilisation low expectations exclusion remain common. People with ID can communicate preferences make choices lead meaningful lives when supported properly. Often co-occurs with autism epilepsy cerebral palsy genetic conditions. Support focuses on life skills communication community inclusion maximising independence. Person-centred planning ensures individual voice guides support not others assumptions.
