The myth vs the truth

Myth
"We cannot do anything until there is a formal diagnosis."
Truth
Support must start based on observed needs and measurable impact, with regular written review dates.

What "needs first" means

Needs
What's difficult: overload, transitions, attention, anxiety, sleep.
Impact
What it costs: missed learning, dysregulation, avoidance, isolation.
Support
What helps: routines, visuals, breaks, reduced demand, quiet space.
Review
Specific dates, measure impact, adjust what isn't working.

Common pushbacks (calm replies)

"We need diagnosis"
"We're pursuing assessment, but requesting support based on observed needs now. Please confirm what will start and when it will be reviewed."
"We'll monitor"
"What specific support will be tried, who owns it, and what is the calendar review date?"
"No resources"
"What reasonable adjustments can you implement immediately? Please confirm in writing."
"It's behaviour"
"What environmental changes and regulation supports will be put in place?"
