Still and quiet does not always mean okay. Some children do not explode. They disappear.
Freeze happens when the nervous system has reached overload and cannot fight or flee. The body’s solution is to stop. The brain shifts into protection mode.
This is often misunderstood in children. Because the child goes quiet and still, adults may assume everything is fine or think the child is ignoring them.
In reality, they may not be able to respond at all. The nervous system has taken over.
For autistic and ADHD children, freeze may happen more often, especially in unpredictable or high demand environments.
A child in freeze may look compliant because they are not disruptive. This does not mean they are engaged or learning. They are in survival mode.
Teaching, instructions, or consequences during freeze are ineffective. The priority is safety and regulation before learning resumes.
The child is not choosing this. They cannot simply snap out of it.
