The Story of Different Minds  ·  The Poor Laws and the Workhouse

Workhouse Logic

How support was designed to deter people from needing it.

Help was made humiliating on purpose.

Simple version

The workhouse system was built around deterrence. Conditions had to be harsh enough that people would avoid asking for help unless desperate.

Why it matters

This logic still echoes when modern support systems are confusing, humiliating, delayed or hostile by design.

Awareverse lens

Awareverse names this clearly. A system that makes help hard to access is not neutral.

Question to ask

When looking at workhouse logic, ask: who had power, who was being labelled, and what would have changed if the human being had been seen first?
