Pity vs Rights

How pity can dehumanise even when it looks kind.

Pity can still keep people below you.

Simple version

Victorian charity often mixed compassion with hierarchy. Disabled people might be pitied while still denied voice, autonomy and equality.

Why it matters

This distinction matters now. A person can be spoken about kindly and still not be listened to.

Awareverse lens

Awareverse chooses rights, dignity and voice over pity.

Question to ask

When looking at pity vs rights, ask: who had power, who was being labelled, and what would have changed if the human being had been seen first?
