Lockdowns, school closures and service delays exposed hidden support needs.
When the world changed overnight, many fragile coping systems collapsed.
COVID disrupted school, healthcare, routines, work, social contact and support services. For many neurodivergent people, that disruption was not just inconvenient. It removed the structure that made daily life possible.
Some people struggled deeply. Others discovered that remote working or home learning reduced sensory and social pressure. The experience was not one single story.
COVID exposed how many people were only just coping before. Waiting lists grew. Assessments were delayed. Children lost routines. Families were left holding more pressure at home.
It also showed that systems could change quickly when forced to, which raised questions about why adjustments had been refused before.
This event matters because it made hidden needs visible.
The lesson should not be to return blindly to normal. For many neurodivergent people, normal was already harmful.
