Practical support for neurodivergent people, families and learnersawareverse.co.uk

Are you burning out?

Parent burnout is real. It is especially common for parents of neurodivergent children who are constantly advocating, managing, researching and fighting — often without adequate support.

Burnout is not weakness. It is what happens when demands consistently outweigh resources for too long. Naming it is the first step.
🔍 Signs of parent burnout — tick what applies
Exhausted even after sleeping
Feeling emotionally numb or detached from your child
Dreading getting through the day
Constant low-level anxiety that never fully switches off
Feeling like you are failing even when you are trying your hardest
Resentment — of your child, your partner, or the situation
Physical symptoms — headaches, getting ill repeatedly, gut problems
Withdrawing from friends and activities you used to enjoy
Snapping more than usual at your child, partner or yourself
Feeling like no one understands what this is really like
Going through the motions without being properly present
Thinking you cannot go on like this but not knowing what to change

💡 What burnout actually needs
Burnout does not respond to self-care tips like bubble baths and walks. It responds to reduced load, genuine rest, connection, and real support.
Reduce something — what can be dropped, delegated or delayed right now
Sleep — prioritise this above almost everything else
Tell someone the truth about how you are actually doing
Ask for help from someone who can genuinely provide it
Stop researching and advocating for one day — it will still be there tomorrow
Connect with other parents who genuinely understand — community matters
Talk to your GP — burnout has serious physical consequences
Lower the bar — what is the absolute minimum that actually needs to happen today
📝 Honest check-in
You cannot pour from an empty cup. Your child needs you sustainable, not perfect. Getting support is not selfish — it is essential.
