School Deregistration Letter — England

Use this template to formally deregister your child from school to home educate in England, under Section 437 of the Education Act 1996.

You do not need the school or LA's permission to home educate. You simply notify the school in writing. The school must remove your child from the register.
If your child has an EHCP, also notify the Local Authority directly. The LA retains responsibility for the EHCP during home education.

I am writing to formally notify you that I am withdrawing my child, , date of birth , from with effect from .

I intend to provide education otherwise than at school, as is my right under Section 437 of the Education Act 1996.

I ask that you remove my child from the school register and confirm this in writing. Please also provide all records, reports and SEND documentation relating to my child within 15 school days.

Keep a copy and proof of sending (email receipt or recorded delivery)
School must confirm removal from register — chase if not received within 15 days
Request all SEND records including reports, assessments, and EHCP documents
If child has an EHCP — notify the Local Authority separately in writing
Connect with your local home education community

⚠️ If your child has an EHCP
The LA retains responsibility for your child's EHCP during home education. They must maintain and annually review it. You can still request changes and appeal to the SEND Tribunal.
Home education in England is legal and your right. You do not need a reason, qualifications, or approval — just to provide a suitable full-time education appropriate to your child's age, ability and aptitude.
