Request the agenda in writing at least 5 days before
Read any reports or documents sent in advance
Write down your key points and questions
Bring copies of relevant evidence and correspondence
Ask if you can bring a supporter or advocate
Know your rights under the Special Educational Needs and Disability Act (Northern Ireland) 2016

You have the right to take notes. You can also ask for meetings to be recorded — check this with the Education Authority first.

Email a summary of what was agreed within 48 hours
Request written minutes from the Education Authority
Note any deadlines agreed and diarise them

⚖️ Know your rights
Your rights are protected under the Special Educational Needs and Disability Act (Northern Ireland) 2016. Below are key things to remember.
You have the right to request a Statement of Special Educational Needs assessment at any time
The Education Authority must respond to a Statement request within 6 weeks
You must be included in all decisions about your child's education
You can bring a supporter, advocate or legal representative to any meeting
You have the right to appeal to SENDIST Northern Ireland if you disagree
Schools must provide SEN support even without a Statement
You can make a Subject Access Request for all records held about your child
