Request the agenda in writing at least 5 days before
Read any reports or documents sent in advance
Write down your key points and questions
Bring copies of relevant evidence and correspondence
Ask if you can bring a supporter or advocate
Know your rights under the Children and Families Act 2014
Prepare your child's views if they are not attending

You have the right to take notes. Ask for agreement before recording the meeting.
✅ After the meeting — checklist
Email a summary of what was agreed within 48 hours
Request written minutes from the LA
Note any deadlines agreed and diarise them
Follow up in writing if commitments are not met
Keep a copy of all correspondence in your file

⚖️ Know your rights — England
Your rights are protected under the Children and Families Act 2014 and the SEND Code of Practice.
You have the right to request an EHCP assessment at any time
The LA must respond to an EHCP request within 6 weeks
You must be included in all decisions about your child's education
You can bring a supporter, advocate or legal representative to any meeting
You have the right to appeal to the SEND Tribunal if you disagree
Schools must provide SEN support even without an EHCP
You can make a Subject Access Request for all records held about your child
